How this travel budget works

Driving cost: distance multiplied by the round-trip factor, then divided by fuel economy. The tool supports US MPG or liters per 100 km, and fuel priced by gallon or liter. Tolls, parking, and any extra driving charges are then added. Driving time uses your own average-speed estimate and does not account for rest stops, weather, or traffic.

Comparing transport: bus, train, and flight fares are entered per person for the entire itinerary, while transfer fees are entered once per group. We compare transport costs only, since shared hotel and meal costs usually aren’t caused by the transport choice. An optional vehicle-wear estimate can be included in the comparison, but it is not money paid at checkout.

Full trip budget: driving cash cost + accommodation nights × nightly rate + travelers × food cost per day × days + other trip activities. Any costs not entered are omitted. The full-budget figure assumes you drive; alternative transportation may change lodging, meals, or local travel costs.

A useful caution: sample prices are fictional. Real fuel economy changes with speed, load, terrain and driving conditions. Confirm current ticket prices, tax, luggage charges, and vehicle costs separately. For more planning ideas, see our budget vacation guide.

Your trip data stays in this browser unless you choose to download a backup. No location tracking, routing service or live price feed is used.
