Emergency Fund Calculator: How Much Should You Save?

How much money should you have saved for an emergency? Our free Emergency Fund Calculator helps you figure out a realistic savings target based on your essential monthly expenses. See how many months your current savings could cover, compare different emergency fund goals, and estimate how long it might take to build your financial safety net. You can also explore unexpected expenses, track savings milestones, and print a personalized emergency fund plan.

How the calculations work

Runway: current available emergency savings divided by your monthly essential expenses. It is a simple average-month estimate, not a prediction of when a bank account will run dry. The what-if calculation first subtracts an emergency bill, then divides any remaining savings by the modeled monthly shortfall. If fallback income fully covers modeled costs, no monthly drawdown is projected; that does not mean your money is unlimited.

Goals and timelines: selected number of months multiplied by entered essential monthly costs. Savings are projected with a fixed end-of-month contribution and, if entered, a constant hypothetical APY converted to an effective monthly rate. Interest is estimated before tax; actual yields can vary. Timelines stop at 50 years rather than promising an impossible payoff.

Privacy and purpose: All figures are saved in your browser using local storage, not linked to a bank. Your exported JSON file contains your entries, so keep it private. Browser cleanup or private browsing can erase saved work. This is an educational budgeting tool, not personalized financial advice. A 3–6-month buffer is a common planning reference, not a rule for every household.
