Home Appliance Electricity Cost Calculator: Find Your Biggest Energy Costs

Ever wondered how much your TV, computer, heater, or refrigerator really adds to your electricity bill? Our free Home Appliance Electricity Cost Calculator helps you estimate the monthly and yearly cost of running household appliances using your own electricity rate. Compare different appliances, explore how changing your usage could reduce your bills, and discover whether upgrading to a more energy-efficient model could actually save you money over time.

⚡ THE THRIFTY HABIT · HOME ENERGY STUDIO

How much do your appliances really cost to run?

Build your appliance list, compare today’s electricity use with a smarter plan, and find out which changes could make the biggest difference.

🔌 Start with your power rate

You can use the energy rate on your electricity bill. The default is just an example — it is not a current national average.

cents / kWh
💡 Use your per-kWh rate including variable energy charges where possible. Fixed monthly connection fees are not included in this estimate.

🧺 Add an appliance

Choose a starter example, then replace every number with your own. Examples use illustrative electricity consumption, not product specifications.

🌿 Before you replace anything

A lower wattage only reduces bills if the actual energy used goes down. And a new appliance that costs $600 may not make sense if the energy savings are just $20 per year. Try reducing use first, then compare the price of upgrading.

  • For fridges and air conditioners that cycle on and off, use average electricity draw over the period, or enter measured kWh if you have it.
  • For washers, dryers, and dishwashers, kWh per cycle can be easier than estimating watts and running time.
  • For seasonal equipment, adjust days per week or the usage profile to reflect an average across the year; otherwise annual costs can be overstated.
  • Use a watt meter, energy monitor, or trustworthy appliance documentation for more accurate numbers. Presets are only examples.

How this electricity calculator works

Daily-use items: annual kWh = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × days per week × (365 ÷ 7) × quantity. Cycle-based items: annual kWh = kWh per cycle × cycles per week × (365 ÷ 7) × quantity. Estimated cost = kWh × your entered rate per kWh.

Proposed savings are the difference between current and planned energy costs. A separate first-year estimate subtracts any one-time upgrade costs. Any payback period assumes usage and prices stay steady; it does not include financing costs, repairs, price changes, or resale value.

Estimates assume each appliance follows the schedule you enter throughout the year. For variable-load or seasonal devices, this can differ significantly from real bills. For additional ideas, read our DIY energy audit and utility-saving guide.
